Atomic Timeline The Alchemy - 1667 Words

Atomic Timeline The Alchemists (500BC-1700BC) The study of Alchemy first began with Aristotle’s idea that all matter was composed of earth, water, fire, and air. It became a foundation for modern sciences, especially chemistry. The main goal of the Alchemists was to find a way to change ordinary metals into precious one such as gold and silver. However, they were never able to accomplish this. Nevertheless, the findings from the experiments of the Alchemists are now classified as chemical properties. Niels Bohr (1885-1962) Niels Bohr, a Nobel Peace prize winner, proposed the idea in 1913 that electrons moved around the nucleus in relatively large orbits, using the theories of his colleague Rutherford as support. He also concluded that the number of electrons in the outer orbits determined the chemical properties of an element. This was illustrated in his model, known as the Bohr Model. The model depicts a small atom with a positively charged nucleus surrounded by negatively charged electrons traveling in specific orbits. The model He also proposed the idea that an electron could drop to a lower energy orbit from a higher energy orbit, producing a photon in the process. Robert Boyle (1627-1691) Robert Boyle, who is considered The Father of Chemistry, stated that elements are substances that are not capable of being broken down into simpler substances. Through his experiments with gases he discovered that the pressure and volume of gas have an inverse relationshipShow MoreRelatedAtom Research Paper1677 Words   |  7 Pagesgood fraction of the amount that was on the earth when it was formed still exists. An ancient pursuit of obscure origin was called alchemy, and had as one of its principal aims, the transmutation of so-called base elements, like lead, into gold. Isaac Newton was one of the greatest physicists who ever lived, but he devoted years of his life to alchemy. The alchemy of the ancient and medieval periods and of Newton really had no chance to succeed because the experiments were chemical. If you put the amount of time chemistry takes up in a timeline, you would split it into four general categories. The four categories are: prehistoric times - beginning of the Christian era (black magic), beginning of the Christian era - end of 17th century (alchemy), end of 17th century - mid 19th century (traditional chemistry), and mid 19th century - present (modern chemistry).
